This shoot with the legendary boxer / former senator of Philippines / genuine man of the people @mannypacquiao for @ESPN was a new record for me in terms of speed of shooting (which seems appropriate given the speed at which Manny fights). Only four minutes elapsed from the time I took my first portrait of Manny to the last portrait. All of the portraits in this set were executed during that time. No photoshop was used after the fact— everything was done, using a Canon R5.
For the first two minutes I had with Manny I used an old Sony Handycam, which I hooked up to a projector and displayed onto the backdrop behind Manny. This created an infinity mirror effect. I fed the DV cam into a circuit bender from @statikstramentz to create the glitch effect. To light Manny I used a foldable panel light from GVM, which I set to hue loop, so each image had different colors. To create the pixelated effect in the first shot I photographed the display on the DV with a macro lens.
For the remaining two minutes I used an Epson Powerlite 2250U projector to display a slideshow of Manny’s career highlights on the sweep behind him as he struck a range of different poses.
A second personal record for me was that I didn’t have to check any bags. All the gear I used in this shoot (except the c-stands and a white sweep) fit into a duffel bag and a camera bag #studioanywhere
Big thanks to editors @kacy.burdette and Robert Booth for the opportunity, freedom, and trust. Thanks to @jeremydangerpictures for the assist and encouragement.
